Made with Xara After learning my craft as a news photographer on the streets of Milwaukee and Chicago and the musical mud of Woodstock during the 'Sixties, I went on to practice 4x5 large-format photography in the tradition of the masters, including Walker Evans, Paul Strand, Edward Weston, Imogen Cunningham and Ansel Adams. For all the digital advances, I still recall the reek of hypo and developer (though not the attendant pollution!) I especially miss my Hasselblad Superwide, with which I made many mind-expanding exposures during extended solo treks into the Canadian Coast and Rocky Mountains. In the mid-'Seventies, I co-founded and co-directed Canada's first west coast photographic gallery, the Mind's Eye, in Vancouver's Gastown. During this time, a selection of my black-and-white prints was purchased by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. In 1977, after a year’s exciting and exacting apprenticeship, I earned a coveted berth as a Vancouver Sun "photog". But I reluctantly turned down this once-in-a-lifetime opportunityin order to shoot colour – and embark on an open-ended Pacific voyage aboard my backyard-built "media boat" with my mate Thea. Over the next eight years under sail, my photographs from the South Pacific, Japan and China appeared in more than 50 publications worldwide, with my accompanying feature articles translated into French, Dutch and Japanese. Sendai, Japan was Celerity’s last port of call and departure point for the first nonstop North Pacific crossing by multihull sailboat. On fetching my vessel’s home port, Victoria, I once again went to work as a correspondent and columnist for Monday magazine. During and immediately after Desert Storm, I worked with a three-man environmental emergency response team in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. After responding to the biggest ecological disaster in history, my video documentary "Eco War" aired extensively on the CBC, with clips also appearing on CNN and NBC – before winning the 1991 US Environmental Film Festival Award. In addition to my book of Hornby images, I am the author of Alt. Health, Scorched Earth, All Fall Down: The Politics Of Terror And Mass Persuasion, Chemtrails Confirmed, Bringing The War Home, Day Of Deception: Ground Zero And Beyond and ABCs Of Cell Phones And Other Hazards Of The Wireless Age.Visit my journalism website here
